Subtracting Decimals to Hundredths

Name

Subtract the decimals. Line up the decimal points and write each difference.

MathSheetGo · Sheet #769Please review before classroom use

Subtracting decimals depends on careful place-value alignment and regrouping across the decimal point. This generator places the larger decimal first, so every difference is zero or positive, and performs the calculation with exact scaled integers rather than approximate floating-point values.

Start with tenths and one whole-number digit, or use the default hundredths setting for a more demanding sheet. Choose the number of questions, paper size, columns and optional answer key, then download a PDF or print directly. A sheet number reproduces the same operands for review and make-up work.

Steps for accurate subtraction

  • Align the decimal points before writing any subtraction columns.
  • Begin at the smallest place and regroup from the column to the left when needed.
  • Remember that one whole equals ten tenths and one tenth equals ten hundredths.
  • Bring the decimal point straight down into the difference.
  • Add the difference back to the smaller number to verify the original larger number.

Regrouping across the decimal point

A problem such as 12.04 − 3.78 may require regrouping through a zero. Have students write each exchanged unit above its column and read the new values by place. Working from named places makes the procedure easier to explain than treating the decimal point as a symbol to move or ignore.

How to print this worksheet

  1. Check the settings above. They are already set for subtracting decimals.
  2. Pick 10, 15, 20 or 30 problems, a title, and the name or date lines you want.
  3. Choose US Letter or A4 to match the paper in your printer.
  4. Press Download PDF for a file you can save and reuse, or Print to send it straight to your printer.
  5. Keep the answer key page for yourself. The sheet number in the footer lets you make the exact same sheet again later.

Frequently asked questions

Can the answers be negative?
No. The generator always places the greater or equal operand first, so differences are never below zero.
Can I practise tenths instead of hundredths?
Yes. Choose Tenths to generate both operands and answers with one decimal place.
Does the answer key preserve trailing zeros?
Yes. Answers are formatted to the selected precision so place value remains visible.

Worksheets are generated automatically and checked by automated tests, but please review each sheet before using it in class.
