Find the Missing Number

Name
Date

Find the missing number. Check that both sides of each equation are equal.

MathSheetGo · Sheet #607Please review before classroom use

Missing-number equations ask students to reason about the relationship between the numbers instead of only calculating from left to right. A blank may replace the first number, the second number or the result, so learners have to identify which inverse operation will reveal the unknown.

Choose one operation for focused practice or mix addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on the same sheet. Addition and subtraction use the selected number of digits. Multiplication and division stay within fact-family ranges, and division questions always have whole-number answers. Every generated worksheet has a matching answer key.

How to teach missing-number equations

  • Read the entire equation and name what is known before choosing an operation.
  • For addition, subtract the known addend from the total to find a missing addend.
  • For subtraction, distinguish between a missing starting number and a missing amount taken away.
  • Connect multiplication and division blanks to fact families, arrays or equal groups.
  • Substitute the answer back into the blank and check that both sides are equal.

How to print this worksheet

  1. Check the settings above. They are already set for missing-number equations.
  2. Pick 10, 15, 20 or 30 problems, a title, and the name or date lines you want.
  3. Choose US Letter or A4 to match the paper in your printer.
  4. Press Download PDF for a file you can save and reuse, or Print to send it straight to your printer.
  5. Keep the answer key page for yourself. The sheet number in the footer lets you make the exact same sheet again later.

Adjusting the difficulty

Start with one-digit addition and subtraction and keep the blank in the answer position. Move the blank to either operand once students understand the equation as a balance. Two- and three-digit settings increase place-value demands, while the harder fact level extends multiplication and division through 12. Mixed operations are most useful after each operation has been practised separately.

Frequently asked questions

Where can the missing number appear?
Choose the first number, second number or result, or select Mixed positions so the blank moves between all three places.
Can division questions produce fractions or remainders?
No. Missing-number division uses fact families with whole-number quotients, so every blank has one clear whole-number answer.
