Counting US Coins

Name
Date

Count the US coins and write the total amount.

MathSheetGo · Sheet #719Please review before classroom use

Counting coins combines skip-counting, place value and decimal notation in a familiar setting. These worksheets use US quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies and name the quantity of each coin in every question. Students can group equal coins, calculate each subtotal and combine the values before writing the total as dollars and cents.

Every amount is calculated with integer cents, so the printed answer cannot drift because of floating-point rounding. Generate 10 to 30 different combinations, reproduce a useful sheet from its number, or create versions A through D for groups that need equivalent practice without identical questions.

A reliable coin-counting routine

  • Name each coin and review its value before beginning the worksheet.
  • Start with quarters, then count dimes, nickels and pennies from greatest value to least.
  • Write a subtotal for each coin type when several different coins appear.
  • Convert totals above 100 cents to dollars and cents using two digits after the decimal point.
  • Check the answer by adding the coin groups in a different order.

Moving from concrete coins to written questions

If students are new to coins, let them build each prompt with real or plastic coins before recording the total. Later, cover the manipulatives and ask them to visualize or draw quick coin symbols. The written quantities reduce visual clutter and make the sheet useful for checking whether learners know coin values rather than only recognizing a particular illustration.
