Elapsed Time Practice

Find how much time passes from the start time to the end time.

MathSheetGo · Sheet #709Please review before classroom use

Elapsed time asks how long an event lasts rather than what time appears on a clock. Students must connect a start time and an end time, cross an hour when necessary, and express the duration accurately. These worksheets generate daytime intervals of up to two hours and calculate every answer with integer minutes.

Choose thirty-, fifteen-, five- or one-minute precision to match the learner's current level. Each question presents the start and end in a consistent digital format, leaving room to show a number line, make an open-clock sketch or count forward in friendly chunks. The matching answer key uses hours and minutes when appropriate.

Strategies students can use

  • Count forward from the start time to the next hour, then continue to the end time.
  • Draw an open number line and record each jump in hours or minutes.
  • Convert both times to minutes, subtract, and convert the difference back to hours and minutes.
  • Check that the duration is reasonable by comparing it with the two-hour maximum on the sheet.
  • Use five-minute intervals before moving to times that require counting individual minutes.

Teaching across an hour boundary

Many errors occur when an interval crosses the next hour. Model a question such as 9:45 to 10:20 by making a 15-minute jump to 10:00 and a 20-minute jump to 10:20, then adding the jumps. Encourage students to write the intermediate hour so they do not subtract clock digits as though times were ordinary base-ten numbers.

How to print this worksheet

  1. Check the settings above. They are already set for elapsed time.
  2. Pick 10, 15, 20 or 30 problems, a title, and the name or date lines you want.
  3. Choose US Letter or A4 to match the paper in your printer.
  4. Press Download PDF for a file you can save and reuse, or Print to send it straight to your printer.
  5. Keep the answer key page for yourself. The sheet number in the footer lets you make the exact same sheet again later.

Frequently asked questions

How long can the generated intervals be?
Durations are greater than zero and no longer than two hours, making them suitable for elementary practice.
Do questions cross from one hour to another?
Yes. The generator includes intervals within an hour and across hour boundaries while staying within the same day.
Are elapsed-time answers calculated exactly?
Yes. Start times, end times and durations are stored as whole minutes, avoiding rounding errors.

Worksheets are generated automatically and checked by automated tests, but please review each sheet before using it in class.
