MathSheetGo · Sheet #202Please review before classroom use

Subtraction is often harder than addition, because children have to keep track of which number is bigger, and borrowing reverses the carrying they just learned. Every problem these sheets make has an answer of zero or more, so you will not get a negative answer by mistake.

The borrowing setting (also called regrouping or trading) decides whether the ones digit on top is smaller than the one underneath. Start with no borrowing so children can trust the column method, then switch on “Required” for focused practice.

Suggested progression

  • 1-digit subtraction facts within 10, then within 20.
  • 2-digit subtraction without borrowing.
  • 2-digit subtraction with borrowing from the tens.
  • 3-digit subtraction with borrowing, including across columns.

How to print this worksheet

  1. Check the settings above. They are already set for subtraction.
  2. Pick 10, 15, 20 or 30 problems, a title, and the name or date lines you want.
  3. Choose US Letter or A4 to match the paper in your printer.
  4. Press Download PDF for a file you can save and reuse, or Print to send it straight to your printer.
  5. Keep the answer key page for yourself. The sheet number in the footer lets you make the exact same sheet again later.

Frequently asked questions

Will any answer be negative?
No. The bigger number always goes first, so every difference is zero or more.
Why can't I pick borrowing with 1-digit numbers?
With single digits the top number is always at least as big as the bottom one, so there is nothing to borrow. Pick 2 or 3 digits to practise borrowing.
