Rounding Decimals to Tenths

Round each decimal to the nearest tenth.

MathSheetGo · Sheet #787Please review before classroom use

Rounding decimals replaces a number with a nearby value at a chosen level of precision. These worksheets ask students to round tenths to the nearest whole number or hundredths to the nearest tenth. Halfway values follow the familiar classroom rule that a deciding digit of 5 rounds up.

The default page uses two-digit whole-number parts and rounds hundredths to tenths. Change the target to whole numbers for an earlier skill, select a smaller number range or create several reproducible versions. The answer key is generated from integer place-value calculations rather than approximate browser arithmetic.

A consistent rounding process

  • Identify and underline the digit in the place being rounded.
  • Look only at the digit immediately to its right.
  • Keep the target digit when the deciding digit is 0 through 4.
  • Increase the target digit by one when the deciding digit is 5 through 9.
  • Remove digits to the right and check the result against the two nearest benchmark values.

Use benchmarks to explain the answer

For 6.47 rounded to tenths, compare the number with 6.4 and 6.5. It lies beyond the midpoint 6.45, so 6.5 is closer. This distance-based explanation helps students understand the rule and prepares them to estimate decimal calculations rather than memorizing a direction for moving digits.

How to print this worksheet

  1. Check the settings above. They are already set for rounding decimals.
  2. Pick 10, 15, 20 or 30 problems, a title, and the name or date lines you want.
  3. Choose US Letter or A4 to match the paper in your printer.
  4. Press Download PDF for a file you can save and reuse, or Print to send it straight to your printer.
  5. Keep the answer key page for yourself. The sheet number in the footer lets you make the exact same sheet again later.

Frequently asked questions

Which decimal places can I round to?
Choose the nearest whole number or the nearest tenth. Rounding to tenths uses values written to hundredths.
How are values ending in 5 rounded?
The worksheets use round half up, so a 5 in the deciding place increases the target digit by one.
Can I create several versions at the same level?
Yes. Choose up to four versions; each keeps the same settings and uses a distinct reproducible set of decimals.

Worksheets are generated automatically and checked by automated tests, but please review each sheet before using it in class.
