Number Bonds & Fact Families

Find the missing part or whole in each number bond.

MathSheetGo · Sheet #584Please review before classroom use

Number bonds show how a whole can be split into parts. Fact families take that relationship one step further by using the same three numbers to make related equations. Together they help children see why addition connects to subtraction and why multiplication connects to division, instead of memorising each calculation in isolation.

Choose number bonds for missing-part and missing-whole practice, addition and subtraction families for four related equations, or multiplication and division families for inverse-fact fluency. Additive work can stay within 10, 20 or 100, while multiplication and division can use smaller facts or factors through 12.

Suggested progression

  • Build and say number bonds within 10 using counters or drawings.
  • Find missing parts and wholes within 20, then within 100.
  • Write two addition and two subtraction equations from the same three numbers.
  • Connect multiplication facts to their two matching division facts.

How to teach fact families

Ask the learner to identify the whole or product first. Then cover one number and explain which inverse operation can uncover it. When writing a family, keep the same three numbers and check every equation aloud. This makes the relationship visible and discourages guessing from the position of the blank.

How to print this worksheet

  1. Check the settings above. They are already set for number bonds and fact families.
  2. Pick 10, 15, 20 or 30 problems, a title, and the name or date lines you want.
  3. Choose US Letter or A4 to match the paper in your printer.
  4. Press Download PDF for a file you can save and reuse, or Print to send it straight to your printer.
  5. Keep the answer key page for yourself. The sheet number in the footer lets you make the exact same sheet again later.

Frequently asked questions

What is a fact family?
A fact family is a set of related equations made from the same numbers. For 3, 5 and 8, the family includes 3 + 5 = 8, 5 + 3 = 8, 8 − 3 = 5 and 8 − 5 = 3.
Do multiplication fact families include division?
Yes. Each worksheet asks for two multiplication facts and two whole-number division facts using the same factors and product.
