Writing Numbers in Words

Write each number in words.

MathSheetGo · Sheet #811Please review before classroom use

Writing whole numbers in words connects spoken language with place value and standard notation. These worksheets present numerals from two through six digits and ask students to express each one in words. The answer key uses common US classroom wording without the optional word “and.”

The default sheet uses five-digit values, including numbers with zeros in internal places. Teachers can reduce or increase the number length, choose 10 to 30 questions and create several equivalent versions. Every worksheet runs in the browser and can be printed or downloaded with its matching answer key.

Read a multi-digit number in periods

  • Separate the number into groups of three digits from the right.
  • Read the thousands group first and add the word thousand.
  • Read the final hundreds, tens and ones group.
  • Use a hyphen between compound tens and ones such as twenty-four.
  • Skip an internal place containing zero instead of naming a zero value.

Use a place-value chart when needed

For a number such as 40,507, place the digits under ten-thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens and ones before reading it. The zero in the thousands place does not erase the forty-thousand value, and the zero in the tens place keeps the final 7 in the ones position. A chart makes those placeholders visible.

Choose from two through six digits, allowing practice up to the hundred-thousands place.
Does the answer key use the word and?
No. It uses common US classroom style, such as four hundred twenty-three.
Do worksheets include numbers containing zero?
Yes. Internal zeros help students practise the role of placeholders when reading and writing numbers.
