Writing Numbers in Expanded Form

Name
Date

Write each number as the sum of its non-zero place values.

MathSheetGo · Sheet #797Please review before classroom use

Expanded form shows that a whole number is the sum of each digit's value. In 4,326, the 4 represents 4,000, the 3 represents 300, the 2 represents 20 and the 6 represents 6. These worksheets generate whole numbers from two through six digits and ask learners to write that decomposition.

The default sheet uses four-digit numbers, including values where one or more interior digits may be zero. Change the number length, problem count, paper size or worksheet title, then print or download a PDF with its answer key. The same sheet number always recreates the same practice set.

How to expand a whole number

  • Name each digit's place from left to right.
  • Write the value represented by every non-zero digit.
  • Join the place values with addition signs.
  • Leave out a place whose digit is zero because it contributes no value.
  • Add the expanded parts to check that they rebuild the original number.

Why numbers containing zero matter

A number such as 5,042 tests whether students understand placeholders. Its expanded form is 5,000 + 40 + 2, not 5,000 + 400 + 2. Ask learners to place the number in a quick chart of thousands, hundreds, tens and ones before writing the sum when an interior zero causes difficulty.

How to print this worksheet

  1. Check the settings above. They are already set for expanded form.
  2. Pick 10, 15, 20 or 30 problems, a title, and the name or date lines you want.
  3. Choose US Letter or A4 to match the paper in your printer.
  4. Press Download PDF for a file you can save and reuse, or Print to send it straight to your printer.
  5. Keep the answer key page for yourself. The sheet number in the footer lets you make the exact same sheet again later.

Frequently asked questions

What number lengths are available?
Choose two, three, four, five or six digits, covering numbers from tens through hundred-thousands.
Does expanded form include zero-value terms?
No. Places containing zero are omitted because they do not contribute to the number's value.
Can I reverse the task and practise standard form?
Yes. Change Practice type to Standard form to convert expanded sums back into ordinary whole numbers.

Worksheets are generated automatically and checked by automated tests, but please review each sheet before using it in class.
