MathSheetGo · Sheet #823Please review before classroom use

Comparing whole numbers is a direct application of place value. Each question presents two numbers of the selected length and asks students to write less than, greater than or equal to. Pairs are generated from exact integers and include close values that require careful left-to-right comparison.

The default worksheet uses five-digit numbers, while settings from two through six digits make the same skill suitable across several grade levels. Choose the question count, create multiple reproducible versions and include or remove the answer-key page before printing or downloading the PDF.

Compare from the greatest place

  • Confirm that both numbers have the same number of digits.
  • Begin with the leftmost digit, which has the greatest value.
  • Move one place to the right only when the current digits match.
  • Stop at the first different pair of digits and choose < or >.
  • Read the completed comparison aloud from left to right to verify the symbol.

Make the symbols meaningful

Rather than relying only on a mnemonic, have students read 43,208 < 43,280 as “43,208 is less than 43,280.” The first different digits are in the tens place, where 0 tens is less than 8 tens. Naming that place explains the comparison and reduces symbol reversals.

How to print this worksheet

  1. Check the settings above. They are already set for comparing whole numbers.
  2. Pick 10, 15, 20 or 30 problems, a title, and the name or date lines you want.
  3. Choose US Letter or A4 to match the paper in your printer.
  4. Press Download PDF for a file you can save and reuse, or Print to send it straight to your printer.
  5. Keep the answer key page for yourself. The sheet number in the footer lets you make the exact same sheet again later.

Frequently asked questions

Which symbols appear in the answers?
The answer key uses < for less than, > for greater than and = when both values match.
What number sizes can I compare?
Choose numbers with two, three, four, five or six digits.
Can equal pairs be generated?
Yes. Equal values appear occasionally so students must consider all three comparison symbols.
