Writing Numbers in Standard Form

Name
Date

Write each expanded number in standard form.

MathSheetGo · Sheet #821Please review before classroom use

Standard form writes a whole number as one numeral instead of a sum of separate place values. A prompt such as 30,000 + 4,000 + 200 + 6 becomes 34,206. These worksheets generate expanded expressions for numbers from two through six digits and ask students to combine them accurately.

The default sheet uses five-digit numbers and includes expressions where a missing term signals a zero placeholder. Change the number length or problem count, make up to four versions and keep the optional answer-key page. The preset is specifically about elementary place value rather than scientific notation.

Convert expanded form to standard form

  • Name the place represented by each addend.
  • Write the digit in its matching place-value column.
  • Insert zero in any place that has no addend.
  • Read the completed numeral to check the size of the number.
  • Expand the final answer again to verify that every term returns.

Watch for missing place values

In 60,000 + 500 + 9, there is no thousands, tens-thousands beyond the 6, or tens term. The standard number is 60,509, and the zeros preserve the empty places. Encourage students to use a column chart when addends are not present in every position.

How to print this worksheet

  3. Choose US Letter or A4 to match the paper in your printer.
  4. Press Download PDF for a file you can save and reuse, or Print to send it straight to your printer.
  5. Keep the answer key page for yourself. The sheet number in the footer lets you make the exact same sheet again later.

Frequently asked questions

What does standard form mean on this page?
It means ordinary whole-number notation, such as writing 4,000 + 300 + 20 + 1 as 4,321.
Is this scientific notation practice?
No. This elementary place-value worksheet converts expanded sums into 2- to 6-digit whole numbers.
How are missing places represented?
Students insert zero in a place with no expanded-form term so all other digits keep their correct value.

Worksheets are generated automatically and checked by automated tests, but please review each sheet before using it in class.
