MathSheetGo · Sheet #1543Please review before classroom use

These worksheets add two 3-digit numbers and guarantee that every problem needs regrouping in at least one column. Students may carry from the ones to the tens, from the tens to the hundreds, or in both places. Some sums pass 1,000, which gives useful practice carrying into a new place value.

The method is the same as 2-digit addition, but students have one more column and may need to remember more than one carried digit. A clean two-column layout leaves room to keep that work organised.

When to use it

Use this sheet after students can add 2-digit numbers with regrouping and understand hundreds, tens and ones. It works as focused practice during a place-value unit, review before multi-step word problems or a quick assessment of whether carrying is recorded consistently.

Teaching tips

  • Have students draw vertical guide lines or use graph paper if their digits drift between columns.
  • Work from right to left and say the place value each time: ones, tens, then hundreds.
  • Write each carried digit directly above the next column before continuing.
  • Estimate by rounding to the nearest hundred, then compare the exact answer with the estimate.
  • When two regroupings happen, pause after the ones column and check that the carried ten was included in the tens total.

How to print this worksheet

  1. Check the settings above. They are already set for 3-digit addition with regrouping.
  2. Pick 10, 15, 20 or 30 problems, a title, and the name or date lines you want.
  3. Choose US Letter or A4 to match the paper in your printer.
  4. Press Download PDF for a file you can save and reuse, or Print to send it straight to your printer.
  5. Keep the answer key page for yourself. The sheet number in the footer lets you make the exact same sheet again later.

What comes next

Once students are reliable, set Regrouping to Mixed so they decide which columns need a carry. Then connect the written method to addition word problems and use estimation to check whether each result is reasonable.

Frequently asked questions

Will every problem need carrying?
Yes. At least one column in every problem totals 10 or more. Some problems require carrying in both the ones and tens columns.
Can an answer be greater than 999?
Yes. Adding two 3-digit numbers can produce a 4-digit sum, which gives practice carrying into the thousands place.
How can I reduce the difficulty?
Choose 10 problems, change Regrouping to Avoid or move back to the 2-digit addition page before returning to three digits.
