MathSheetGo · Sheet #612Please review before classroom use

Every problem on this sheet adds two 2-digit numbers where the ones add up to 10 or more, so students have to regroup (carry) a ten into the tens column. Because no problem can be solved without that step, it is a good way to see whether a student really understands carrying, rather than getting lucky on easy problems.

When to use it

Use this sheet after students can add 2-digit numbers without regrouping and know their addition facts within 20. It works well as a warm-up for a few days after you introduce carrying, as a quick check before moving to 3-digit addition, or as homework when you want parents to see the written method.

Teaching tips

  • Start with base-ten blocks or a place-value chart: make 38 and 27, combine the ones, and trade ten ones for one ten before writing anything.
  • Ask students to say the trade out loud: “8 plus 7 is 15, that's 1 ten and 5 ones.”
  • Have students write the small carried 1 in a consistent spot above the tens column so it is not forgotten.
  • Encourage a quick estimate first (38 + 27 is about 40 + 30 = 70) so students can spot answers that are far off.
  • Common error to watch for: writing 15 in the ones place and getting 515. If you see it, go back to the blocks.

How to print this worksheet

  1. Check the settings above. They are already set for 2-digit addition with regrouping.
  2. Pick 10, 15, 20 or 30 problems, a title, and the name or date lines you want.
  3. Choose US Letter or A4 to match the paper in your printer.
  4. Press Download PDF for a file you can save and reuse, or Print to send it straight to your printer.
  5. Keep the answer key page for yourself. The sheet number in the footer lets you make the exact same sheet again later.

What comes next

Once students are accurate on most problems, mix regrouping and non-regrouping problems (set Regrouping to “Any”) so they have to decide when to carry. Then move on to 3-digit addition, where regrouping can happen in more than one column, and to 2-digit subtraction with borrowing, which reverses the same idea.

Frequently asked questions

Is every problem guaranteed to need regrouping?
Yes. With Regrouping set to “Required”, the generator only keeps problems where at least one column adds to 10 or more.
Can sums go over 100?
Yes. Two 2-digit numbers can add up to as much as 198, so some problems also regroup into the hundreds.
How do I make an easier version?
Change Regrouping to “Avoid” for the same layout without carrying, or pick 10 problems for a shorter sheet.
