Long Division with Remainders

Name
Date

Use long division. Write each quotient and remainder.

MathSheetGo · Sheet #2341Please review before classroom use

These long division worksheets use a traditional division bracket with a one-digit divisor and either a two or three-digit dividend. The default sheet includes remainders, and every remainder is smaller than the divisor. Turn remainders off when students are first learning the sequence and need examples that divide evenly.

The quotient appears above the bracket on the answer key while the student page leaves working space around each problem. Preview, print and PDF all use the same generated questions. Share the page link or keep the sheet number when the exact set needs to be opened again for corrections or make-up work.

When to use long division practice

Use the two-digit setting when introducing the divide, multiply, subtract and bring-down cycle. Move to three digits once students can repeat the cycle without losing place value. Remainders add another decision at the end, so enable them only after whole-number quotients are understood.

Teaching tips

  • Have students estimate the first quotient digit before writing it above the division bracket.
  • After multiplying, line up the product under the correct part of the dividend before subtracting.
  • Ask students to bring down exactly one digit and repeat the same four-step cycle.
  • Check every result with divisor × quotient + remainder = dividend.
  • Remind students that a valid remainder must always be smaller than the divisor.

How to print this worksheet

  1. Check the settings above. They are already set for long division.
  2. Pick 10, 15, 20 or 30 problems, a title, and the name or date lines you want.
  3. Choose US Letter or A4 to match the paper in your printer.
  4. Press Download PDF for a file you can save and reuse, or Print to send it straight to your printer.
  5. Keep the answer key page for yourself. The sheet number in the footer lets you make the exact same sheet again later.

Adjusting the worksheet

Choose two-digit dividends for shorter problems and three digits for another cycle of the algorithm. Switch off remainders for exact division, reduce the sheet to 10 questions for guided practice or create versions A–D when several groups need comparable work without identical dividends.

Frequently asked questions

How are remainders written on the answer key?
Answers use quotient R remainder, such as 43 R 2. The underlying equation is checked so the remainder is always positive and smaller than the divisor.
What divisors are used?
Long division mode uses one-digit divisors from 2 through 9. The dividend control limits the number being divided to two or three digits.
